In January a girl on one of my Facebook groups mentioned a womens only mixed martial arts & self defence class was starting up nearby. For some reason I couldn’t get it out of my head. The class started in February, and along I went, not really knowing what to expect. Before I knew it, I was rolling forward, rolling backward, fending off attackers and crashing to the ground … and I loved it!!! I’ve been going to classes most weeks for 5 months, and I can do things that I couldn’t do before. I can sit for over 1 minute on a fit-ball without my feet touching the ground. I can not only touch my toes, but reach past them. I huffed and puffed my way through a brutal circuit not once, but twice last night … I couldn’t have done that 5 months ago!
Last night was the first time I’ve worn wrist wraps, and they made a big difference (plus they look really cool!!!). I finally figured out that I needed the right tool for the job, and next I’m getting some gloves.
I can’t explain it, but I finally found my thing. Walking is boring, the gym is overwhelming and expensive, team sports take too much time out of my weekend … but my MMA class is a haven for me. It’s a safe place where I don’t feel judged for my size, technique or for falling off my fit-ball laughing. My teacher, Tiago, does devise some diabolical circuits, but he makes sure we are safe, pushes us when it gets to easy and offers encouragement at all times. And Simone must have seen a deer in the headlights when she set eyes on me at my 2nd lesson, because she really showed me how to do things right so that the moves were more effective and safer. Gracie Shark Gym … I’m so glad I found you 😀
